Managing the Result

Sorting and Grouping Results

Sorting results means changing the order in which they are displayed according to a specific criterion, whereas grouping them implies breaking the order by creating small groups instead of a continuous list without affecting the sorting order in any way. The Contacts category does not allow grouping because the Name and Address sorting orders do not really need to be grouped. Sorting fields may be different from one category to another.

To modify the sorting order:

  • Click the Arrange by command located on the result title bar.
  • Choose an available criterion from the displayed list.

If you wish to group results, select the Show in Groups option in the drop-down list of the Arrange by command.

Viewing Modes

Two different modes for displaying the results: Standard View and Detailed View. Displayed fields vary depending on the view selected. Here is the list of fields for each category:

Category Standard View Detailed View
Emails Email subject, sender or recipient's name and sent or received date, including the hour. Adds the folder name where the email message is stored.
Files File name and path to the folder in which it is stored. Adds date and time at which the file was created or last modified and file size in bytes.
Music Music title and artist name. Adds album title, music genre and duration.
Pictures File name, path to the folder in which it is stored, date and time at which it was created or last modified and dimension in pixels (when available). Adds a thumbnail of the picture.
Videos File name and path to the folder in which it is stored. Adds date and time at which it was created or last modified, video dimensions in pixels (when available) and file size in bytes.
Contacts Name of the contact, folder in which it is stored and email address of the contact. Adds the contact's home and business phone numbers (when available).
Favorites OName of the favorite and path to the folder in which it is stored. Adds the complete Web page address of the favorite.
History Name of the Web site. Adds the Web page links.

To change the viewing mode:

  • Click the view icon () located at the right of the result title bar.
  • Choose Standard View or Detailed View.

To open a document in its native application, double click on the corresponding result. The header of the result list section also provides shortcuts to native applications. * The Mozilla Thunderbird's architecture does not allow any such shortcuts. For the same reason, the Print and Delete commands do not appear for Eudora and Outlook Express results.

Using the Preview Section

Available for each desktop search category, the Preview section displays a software-based preview of the selected result with its details, a concise profile of its main properties.

To facilitate examination of a selected result, Copernic Desktop Search highlights the keywords in the document preview and can scrolls to the first match automatically (for more information, see Options > General).

Highlighting and Word-Find Buttons

The header of the Preview section for the Emails, Files, Favorites and History categories features a button () that allows you to toggle the highlighting of keywords in previewed documents. It also displays a specific word-find button for each keyword (5 buttons max.). Click on a word-find button to scroll to the next or previous occurrence of the corresponding keyword in the document preview. To go to the previous word occurrence, hold the Shift key while clicking the word-find button.
