Main Window Overview - Files Category

The Files category allows you to search for various types of files that are stored on your PC, namely files from any locations as specified in the Options window.

File formats processed entirely by default are: Adobe Acrobat Document (.pdf), HTML Document (.htm), Microsoft Excel Worksheet (.xls), Microsoft Word Document (.doc), Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation (.ppt), Rich Text Format (.rtf), Text Document (.txt), WordPerfect File (.wp). The following text file types can also be fully indexed by default: .ASP, .C, .CPP, .CS, .CSV, .H, .INC, .INI, .JAVA, .PAS, .XML and .XSL. The following files types are also processed by default but certain file properties only can be indexed: GZ, HLP, RAR, SWF, TAR, VSD.

Performing Searches

The Search for section lets you enter a query in a search box and refine it using various available search fields.

  1. Type the query terms in the keyword box, or click the down arrow and choose terms in the search history. Use search operators, such as Boolean operators, parentheses and quotation marks to refine your query.
  2. Click the search button or hit the Enter key (not required).

Refining Searches

Note: If the search fields are hidden, click Show Options. Available fields are: File type, Size, Date and Folder.

  1. To find documents of a specific file format, choose the desired format in the File Type list. The default Any choice means that the File type field is not a filtering factor.
  2. To find documents of a specific size, choose among the following choices of the Size list:
    • Any: Finds any file irrespective of the file size.
    • Small: Finds files that are at least 100 KB and less than 1 MB.
    • Medium: Finds files that are less than 1 MB.
    • Large: Finds files that are more than 1 MB.
    • Specify size: Finds files that are at least or at most the specified number of KB.
  3. To find documents that were created or modified on a precise day or between specified time limits, choose one of these options in the Date field list:
    • Any: Finds any file irrespective of the creation or modification date.
    • Today: Finds files that were created or modified today.
    • Yesterday: Finds files that were created or modified yesterday.
    • This week: Finds files that were received or sent this week.
    • This month: Finds files that were received or sent this month.
    • This year: Finds files that were received or sent this year.
    • Is (specify a date): Finds files that were created or modified on the specified date.
    • After (specify a date): Finds files that were created or modified after the specified date.
    • Before (specify a date): Finds files that were created or modified before the specified date.
    • Between (specify two dates): Finds files that were created or modified between the two specified dates.
  4. To find documents stored in a specific folder on your PC, type the complete path in the Folder text box or use the Browse option after clicking the text box down arrow. The default Any choice means that the Folder type field is not a filtering factor.
  5. Click the search button or hit the Enter key (not required).
